The German Association of the Corrugated Board Industry (VdW) published GVM’s study on the effect of a mandatory share of reusable transport packaging on corrugated cardboard packaging. The estimation was based on the reuse targets required in the EU-Commission’s proposal for Packaging and Packaging Regulation from November 2022.
Here are the links to the full study and to the summary.

At the AGVU Orientation Day in June 2023, GVM’s Managing Director Kurt Schüler gave a presentation on the contributing role of packaging on the climate neutrality target for 2045. Mr. Schüler revealed the results of a study carried out by GVM Gesellschaft für Verpackungsmarktforschung and the ifeu‐Institute for Energy and Environmental Research Heidelberg GmbH on behalf of eight industry associations.
The study shows that the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the German packaging consumption volume can be reduced by 94 percent by 2045 The study predicts that packaging consumption in Germany has reached its peak in 2021 and will decline in the future. On the other hand, the use of recyclate and the recycling quotas will increase. Further information on the study can be found here.

The German Association of Plastics Packaging Industry (IK) publishes GVM’s study on the material efficiency of packaging materials in comparison. The term material efficiency describes how much packaging material is required to distribute a unit of filling goods (e.g., in g of packaging material per kg of goods filled). The complete study can be found here on IK’s website.

The Federal Environment Agency has published GVM’s study on the proportion of highly recyclable packaging subject to system participation on the German market.
In the future, the participation fees in the dual systems should be based on how recyclable the packaging is. Various fund solutions are being discussed in this context. . GVM has determined the proportion of packaging subject to system participation which more than 90% or more than 95% recyclable according to the current minimum standard. The full study can be found here.

The specialist article by GVM’s Project Manager Nicolas Cayè on the trends of packaging in the German beer market was published in the Brauwelt. Even though the share of reusable packaging remained the same, there was a lot of movement in the field of beer bottling. The article provides insights into the packaging structure of domestic sales, imports and exports. The full article in the Brauwelt can be found here.

In April 2023, GVM-Project Manager Nicolas Cayé was entered in the commercial register. GVM team wishes you luck and success!

On behalf of the WWF, GVM conducted a study on offers for reusable packaging in the German catering industry. The background to this is the obligation for gastronomies to offer reusable packaging, which came into force on 01.01.2023. The results show that reusable packaging has hardly become widespread in the gastronomy sector. The study analyses the cause and presents possible solutions. You can find the complete study here.
